How To Manage Dry Skin, Plus, My Favorite Products

In most cases, dry skin is caused by environmental factors that remove moisture from the skin.

Heat, hot showers, arid climates, and harsh soaps can all trigger dry skin. Fortunately, you can use some products and follow some easy tips to address dry skin symptoms and restore moisture. Read on to learn more.

1. Shortening Showers and Baths

Many people believe the misconception that if their skin is submerged in water, their body is absorbing moisture. However, hot water can actually wash away your body’s natural oils that work to moisturize the skin. Over time, this can cause your skin to dry out more quickly and have trouble retaining moisture. Instead of taking long hot showers or baths, opt for a shorter time spent under hot water. Once finished, be sure to moisturize your skin while it’s still damp. This is recommended because wet skin can more effectively absorb the moisturizer.

2. Use Protection

You need to protect your skin from drying influences. For example, cleaning chemicals, even ones that are not harsh, can dry out skin that is already prone to dryness. Wear gloves when washing dishes or when cleaning your bathroom.

You might also wear gloves when doing yard work. When visiting cold climates, wear gloves to protect from the cold and wind, as both of these can lead to increased dryness.

Finally, if you spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun, wear a hat to keep the sun off your face. The UV light can cause damage, which leads to dryness. You should also wear a daily foundation or moisturizer on your face that has SPF protection, as this will also help reduce the risk of sunburn.

Using an emollient (moisturiser) regularly will be enough to help most cases of dry and dehydrated skin. Emollient creams and lotions are used to soothe and hydrate the skin and can significantly help reduce dryness and itching.

Apply a moisturiser directly to the skin and use it throughout the day to reduce water loss, especially if you’re struggling with dry hands. If you’re not sure which moisturiser is best for your skin type, check with a doctor or pharmacist.

My favorite products

Charlotte Tilbury has been one of my favorite beauty brands for years. The Magic Cream is one of their best sellers and I can see why! It’s a great versatile everyday kind of moisturizer to balance and hydrate my skin. I like that it helps noticeably smooth, plump skin and hydrate the face without feeling too heavy or thick – I use it as a foundation primer too. I’ve repurchased multiple jars over the years. It has hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C + E to give you a nice glow.

I love La Roche-Posay! My skin changes with the seasons but I know that I am safe when I use this brand and it isn’t going to give me a rash. It is fragrance-free, so no itchy/watery eyes which is great! It has a light consistency so it is perfect for summer. My skin feels nourished, hydrated (without any greasiness) and it doesn’t sting when I apply this cream. I have never had a reaction to any La Roche-Posay products.

CeraVe skin care products could be a good option if you’re dealing with dry or sensitive skin. The ceramides used as key ingredients in CeraVe skin care products are beneficial ingredients that can help strengthen the skin’s barrier function.
